Cigna Leaving Colorado Health Insurance Marketplace in 2027

Cigna Is Leaving Colorado’s Individual Health Insurance Marketplace: What Members Need to Know for 2027

If you currently have a Cigna individual or family health insurance plan in Colorado, an important change is coming.

Cigna has announced that it will stop offering Affordable Care Act individual and family health plans after December 31, 2026. This is a nationwide decision that includes plans offered in Colorado. Cigna has stated that current coverage and provider networks will remain unchanged through the end of 2026 and that members will receive support as they transition to new coverage for 2027. Read more about Cigna’s announcement.

8 Reasons

What Does This Mean for Current Cigna Members?

If you are enrolled in a Cigna individual or family plan, you can generally continue using your current coverage through December 31, 2026, as long as you continue paying your premiums and remain eligible.

However, your Cigna plan will not be available for renewal in 2027. You will need to select a different health insurance plan during the upcoming Open Enrollment Period.

This announcement applies to Cigna’s ACA individual and family health plans. It does not mean that every Cigna product or employer-sponsored Cigna plan is leaving Colorado.

Do You Need to Change Plans Right Now?

In most cases, no. Your current Cigna coverage should remain in place through the end of 2026.

Leaving the market at the end of the year does not automatically create an immediate Special Enrollment Period. Unless you experience another qualifying life event, such as losing other coverage, moving, getting married, or having a child, you will normally select your replacement plan during Open Enrollment.

You should carefully review all notices you receive from Cigna and Connect for Health Colorado. These notices should explain when your coverage ends and what steps you need to take.

Don’t Automatically Accept a Replacement Plan

When an insurance company leaves the market, you may be matched with another available plan. However, that plan may not be the best option for your healthcare needs or budget.

Before enrolling, compare:

  • Monthly premiums after any available tax credit

  • Deductibles and maximum out-of-pocket costs

  • Primary care doctors and specialists

  • Hospital and medical-group networks

  • Prescription drug coverage

  • Copayments and coinsurance

  • Coverage when traveling outside your local service area

The lowest monthly premium is not always the lowest-cost plan overall. A plan with a slightly higher premium could save you money if it includes your doctors, medications, and preferred hospitals.

Will You Still Qualify for a Marketplace Tax Credit?

Possibly. Cigna’s departure does not, by itself, eliminate your eligibility for financial assistance through Connect for Health Colorado.

Your eligibility and tax-credit amount will depend on factors such as:

  • Your projected household income

  • The number of people in your tax household

  • Your county and ZIP code

  • The cost of available benchmark plans

  • Access to other qualifying health coverage

Because premiums, plans, and tax credits can change each year, it is important to update your household information and review your 2027 options instead of assuming your costs will stay the same.

Pay Special Attention to Doctors and Prescriptions

Changing insurance companies often means changing provider networks and prescription formularies.

Even if your doctor accepts the new insurance company, they may not participate in the specific plan or network you are considering. Always verify the exact plan name and network directly with both the insurance company and the provider’s office.

If you take regular medications, check:

  • Whether each medication is covered

  • The medication’s formulary tier

  • Prior-authorization requirements

  • Quantity limits or step-therapy rules

  • Whether your preferred pharmacy is in-network

This is especially important for specialty medications, diabetic supplies, continuous glucose monitors, insulin pumps, and other higher-cost treatments.

You do not need to panic, but you should not wait until the last minute.

As the 2027 Open Enrollment Period approaches, gather the following information:

  • Your current insurance plan and monthly premium

  • A list of your doctors and preferred hospitals

  • Your estimated 2027 household income

  • Information about any upcoming procedures or treatments

Having this information ready will make it easier to compare plans and avoid unexpected disruptions in your care.
